Keeping Up With The ADAS Revolution

by Andy Stilgoe, RMI Academy Trainer

As technology advances, so do the systems of our vehicles. Nowadays, many vehicles come equipped with an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS). The ADAS system uses various sensors, cameras, and software to assist drivers in making their journeys safer and more convenient than ever before. However, these systems require specialist knowledge and equipment to repair and maintain properly.

If you're a technician, you’ll know that working with ADAS vehicles is becoming increasingly common.

Whether you're dealing with a malfunctioning sensor or need to calibrate the ADAS system, it's essential to understand the basics of working with ADAS vehicles.

Andy Stilgoe, RMI Academy of Automotive Skills ADAS trainer explains “One of the most critical aspects of working with ADAS vehicles is knowing how to diagnose problems accurately. ADAS systems can be complex, and a malfunction can be difficult to identify without the right training or equipment. Technicians must be trained to understand the ADAS system's specifics to be able to determine which component is causing issues or concerns.”

In addition, repairing ADAS systems requires specialised tools and equipment. Calibrating a camera or radar requires more than just simple tools. Technicians must have access to specialised equipment that allows them to perform precise adjustments.

Another critical factor to keep in mind when working with ADAS vehicles is the importance of calibration. ADAS systems rely on precise measurements to operate correctly. If a sensor or camera is misaligned, the system may not function as intended, putting drivers and passengers at risk. Calibration of the ADAS system must be carried out with extreme care to ensure that the system is functioning optimally.

Moreover, it's essential to keep up to date with the latest ADAS system developments and updates. ADAS systems are continually evolving, and keeping up with the changes can be challenging. Technicians should be aware of any updates to the systems and carry out relevant training to ensure they remain competent in handling the latest technology.

Andy continues, “Working with ADAS vehicles can be incredibly rewarding, but it requires a significant level of knowledge and understanding. Technicians need to have relevant skills and knowledge to diagnose and calibrate ADAS systems successfully. Furthermore, keeping up to date with the latest developments is essential to ensure that customers are provided with reliable and safe repairs and any adjustments required for their vehicles”.
