Level 2 Award in MOT Testing (Classes 4 & 7)

Course Overview

 

This is a four day course including an online examination for experienced technicians who would like to become an MOT Tester, plus a practical assessment which can be completed either at the RMI Academy or at your business premises.

Please note: Candidates are required to bring their original Level 3 qualification certificate for inspection on the first day of this course. 

 

Course Structure

 

The course will cover:

  • Relevant acts and regulations

  • Tools for the job

  • When you can refuse to begin a test

  • Use of the testing manual

  • Standards and procedures

  • Documentation and security

  • Use of the online MOT testing service

  • Routine inspection

  • Classes of vehicle

Qualification

 

On completion of the course, a candidate will be qualified as an MOT tester, having achieved the National Occupational Standard for the role. Once this qualification has been awarded, a candidate will be able to apply to the DVSA to be authorised as an MOT tester. 

 

Eligibility

 

To be eligible, candidates must:

 

  • Possess an acceptable vocational education qualification or acceptable accreditation; such as a Vehicle Technician Accredited Assessment (VTAA) Level 3 accreditation. The full list of acceptable qualifications can be found here.

  • Be a skilled technician with a minimum of 4 years' full time employment, permitted by law, in the service and repair of the vehicle types to be tested

  • Have current and full UK driving licence for the vehicle classes you want to test

  • Have no unspent convictions for criminal offences connected with the MOT testing scheme or the motor trade, or involving acts of violence or intimidation

  • Be 'of good repute'.

Due to the changes to MOT training, candidates are no longer required by DVSA to be nominated by an MOT Manager before attending a training course. Instead an MOT manager needs to verify an individual's employment upon completion of the course.

Practical Assessments at the RMI Academy

​

Don't want to wait to complete your practical assessment at your garage? You can now complete your assessment as part of your course at an RMI Academy training venue! These assessments are conducted as a fifth day addition to the MOT Tester course, and are subject to a first-come, first-served basis. Ask one of our friendly helpline staff about securing your practical assessment as part of your course by calling 01788 538399. Please note this option is only available at our Southam and Runcorn training academies.

DVSA VT8 Demonstration Tests

​

If candidates require a premises at which to complete their demonstration test, the RMI Academy can arrange for this to be conducted on-site, once the tester has successfully completed their Practical Assessment. For more information, please call 01788 538399
