As your “one stop shop” for training, we can support technicians through every step of their career with courses at our venues in Runcorn, Southam and Winchester, all tailored to help enhance the skills of your technicians across a variety of disciplines.

RMI Academy training centres are open to all eligible candidates and Testing Stations; however, members of the RMI can take advantage of preferential prices as a benefit of membership.

MOT Annual Training

The RMI Academy is continuing to provide Annual Training for MOT testers wishing to complete the mandatory training and assessment for the 2019/20 testing year. Although the assessment’s pass rate remains at 70% for this year, we are still advising testers to complete their training early to remain up-to-date with the latest information provided by the DVSA.

MOT Training Courses

All our automotive training provides technicians with the skills needed to become and maintain their status as an MOT Tester or MOT Manager. The RMI’s training venues also provide classroom-based Annual Training sessions on the current DVSA syllabus, allowing testers to complete their mandatory training.

MOT Tester Training - Class 4 & 7

This is a three-day course, including an online examination, (plus a practical assessment, completed at your business premises) for experienced technicians who would like to become an MOT Tester.

MOT Tester Training - Class 1 & 2

This is a three-day course for experienced technicians who would like to become an MOT Tester for motorcycles.

Course prices start from £495 + VAT for RMI Members.

Vehicle Technician Accredited Assessment (VTAA) Level 3

This course is designed for technicians whose job role involves the inspection, maintenance and repair of light vehicles. The accreditation provides proof of current competence and recognition of your skills and has been designed for technicians who do not hold a relevant level 3 qualification but want to become an MOT tester for class 3, 4, 5 or 7 vehicles.

Course prices start from £600 + VAT for RMI Members.

MOT Centre Management

The DVSA has launched new guidance called ‘Manage your MOT centre’ that contains information on the management systems, policies and checks you need in place at your MOT centre to make sure MOT testing is up to standard. You can read more about this here.

The RMI Academy of Automotive Skills offers MOT Centre Management training that covers everything you need to know to run a compliant MOT centre, and provides a formal qualification recognised by the DVSA.

This two-day course is suitable for prospective or current centre managers looking for a qualification or testers who want to further their career, and there are no entry requirements.

Course prices start from £375 + VAT for RMI Members.

MOT Annual Training Classroom Sessions - Class 4 & 7

2019/20 MOT Annual Training classroom sessions at all RMI training venues include three hours of training, an RMI workbook, access to the online assessment, and refreshments.

Course prices start from £75 + VAT per candidate.

Enhanced Annual Training Classroom Sessions

Enhanced, full-day annual training courses are also available at RMI Academy sites to provide testers with further training and practical elements covering the implementation of EU Directive 2014/45.

Technical Training Courses

Being a member of the IGA provides you and your technicians with a range of training opportunities. Our courses progress from introductory on-site training, to comprehensive Level 3 courses at the RMI Academy training venues. Below you can find a list of our currently available technical training courses.

Diagnostic Procedures 1

This 1-day course assists technicians in developing an understanding of the diagnosis of modern vehicle systems, including the most effective ways to identify and isolate faults, primarily in petrol engine management. The utilisation of popular aftermarket diagnostic scan-tools; the multi-meter and digital oscilloscope, will be discussed and demonstrated. This course costs £125 + VAT for RMI members.

Diagnostic Procedures 2

This 1-day course will look at the diagnostic process when applied to diesel engine management and other commonplace vehicle systems. The wide range of the course is intended to give independent technicians a brief overview of the various systems. It will show that an effective diagnostic process can be used to isolate faults on all systems found on the vehicle.

This course costs £125 + VAT for RMI members.

Intermediate Oscilloscope

This 1-day course will build on the basic use of an oscilloscope to facilitate the testing of automotive systems. Using a blend of theory and practical work, insight will be gained into the advantages of using and an automotive oscilloscope over other methods of testing to monitor the operation of both electronic and electro-mechanical components. This course costs £125 + VAT for RMI members.

Hybrid/Electric Vehicle Routine Maintenance Level 2

This 2-day course covers the skills and knowledge required to work safely around a vehicle’s high and low voltage electrical system and electric drive train system, whilst carrying out repairs or maintenance. This course costs £400 + VAT for RMI members.

Hybrid/Electric Vehicle Repair Level 3

This 3-day course covers the technology associated with the present generation of hybrid and electrically propelled vehicles. The focus is on gaining a thorough understanding of how the electric vehicle functions and the variation of electric vehicle types currently available, and there is a strong emphasis on safe working practices.

This course costs £600 + VAT for RMI members.
